Gaza’s Rafah crossing, sealed for nearly two years after Israel bombed it in October 2023 and destroyed it in May 2024, is preparing to reopen under strict Israeli control.
Israel will pre-approve all Palestinian passengers, with the EU monitoring the Palestinian side and the Palestinian Authority issuing exit stamps whilst Israel maintains remote oversight.
Senior Israeli ministers have indicated they want more people leaving Gaza than returning.
The reopening offers critical hope for 20,000 patients requiring urgent medical evacuation, including 4,500 children, after more than 1,200 patients died whilst waiting since the crossing closed.
Al Jazeera’s Nour Odeh reports.
Amjad Shawa is the Director of the Palestinian NGO’s Network.
He is urging countries to pressure Israel to ensure Palestinians are able to return to Gaza through the Rafah crossing.
